Alzheimer's Toll

by Rachel RTVW   Feb 8, 2007

I looked upon his face into the wrinkles of time,
Time which is very limited for him now.
I looked into his eyes so sad and tired,
As sweat dropped from his brow.
I touched his hand fragile and cold,
Cold from diminishing circulation.

The man I saw is 89 years old,
He was calling out in desperation.
Calling to his wife and he doesn't remember,
She's not here, imagine the devastation
She passed away last December.
He wants to go home but he has forgot,
His home was sold after his wife passed.
Profit used for a nursing home bed and burial plot.

His wife is just a memory, sublime.
Every time he's reminded of her death,
It is just as painful as the first time.
Over and over again, reality he can not see,
For he longs to see his darling wife.
How horrible this confusion must be,
Alzheimer's has taken hold of his life.

I know how you were feeling when you saw this man. My great grandmother continued calling for her husband, and It was so emotionaly heartbreaking to me. I couldn't do anything for her, except hug her and tell her that everything was going to be ok. So..lovely poem, beautifuly written, and your message is quite powerful.
