Over coffee

by Iola   Feb 21, 2007

You sit across this wooden table,
A reflection of innocence meeting with me.
You barely know me but you choke on my fable,
In this coffee shop made from oak tree.

You say that you've know him for years and a day,
Telling me that you love him more than life.
Suddenly I realize why you've called me today,
Sometimes an epiphany can cut deeper than a knife.

She explains they've been best friends from kin,
Through her teens she fell in love with his smell.
She'll give her life to get under skin,
But she's remained his old buddy and pal.

Tears well in her eyes as she described that day,
With the news of love at first sight!
The trembling in his voice made her heart turn to clay,
And at that moment I understood her plight.

She needed to know what the chances are,
Of me inviting him into my heart.
Because if I'll retract and love him from afar,
She'll seduce him with just the right card.

"He will not accept that he cannot be with you",
She told me with tears in her eyes.
'"o if you truly love him you will hide what is true,
And pretend that you are breaking all ties".

As I leave the ship with coffee fresh in my breath,
And an aching pain in my chest.
I knew I will love this man until we are parted by death,
But I'm wishing them both all of the best ...
