Stayed Awake

Stayed awake ‘till the storm stopped,
And the wind slowed to a gentle breeze,
And the rain drizzled away to a sprinkle,
And the clouds begin to part,
Leaving space for the stars to shine through.
I saw the black sky lighten,
And the sun peek out from just beyond the horizon,
I waited for sleep to attack me,
But I stayed awake.
The sun rose,
And I watched the sky turn from
Black to purple to a light blue,
And all of a sudden,
A burst of light,
As the sun raced out into the sky.
As I watched the sun,
I remembered you,
My tears slowly dried,
And my yawns gave way to a smile,
As I remembered how sleepless I would get
Just sitting next to you.
Now sleep escapes me yet again,
And I wonder where you are,
And whether there was a storm near you,
And whether you are thinking of me,
As I am always thinking of you.
I stayed awake,
Though I really needed that sleep,
I watched the storm wax and wane,
And then I saw the sun rise again,
Perhaps my dreams will come during the day,
Though I feel as though I saw them
As I lay awake in bed,
For so long,
As I stayed awake in bed.
