The First One

by Nearly but not quite   Apr 16, 2007

Will you forget me
In a few years' time?
Will you forget the fun we had?
And what we shared?

Will you forget me
For someone prettier?
Or better at writing poems?
Or happier?

Will you forget me
For a girl with flowing locks
Of gold so fair?
Or for another man?

Will you forget me
For one you had before?
For the friend who made you laugh?
For one of my friends?

I half want you
To forget me
Because I half want
To forget you.

But I know deep down
I'll never forget
The perfect love we had
Or the way you made me feel.

Every man I ever meet
Will be compared to you
And found wanting
In the scales of love.

There is an aching hole in me
That only you can fill
And I can no longer think of you
Without weeping.
