The Laughter Lines have forgotten the Joke

by John Long   Apr 20, 2007

She won Miss Cleveland back in 63,
Did some Commercials for the TV,
Daddy was proud of his baby girl,
Mama was on top of her own little world.

In the finals of Miss USA,
"Good evening Miss Cleveland, enchante!
Won't you tell the viewers a little bit about yourself?"
"Well, I'm thirty eight, twenty four, thirty six,
I want to travel the World and work with kids"!

Well she's thirty nine again, six kids of her own,
The old man wouldn't leave her alone,
The laughter lines have forgotten the joke,
The crows feet spreading out like spokes.

"Hey, I remember you, weren't you on the TV?",
"Yes, I was Miss Cleveland back in 63",
The clock's crippled hands crawled slowly on
And she smiled at the thought of what was gone.

This poem was something else, i've never read one like this. i loved the sadness and despair in it, i can't put into words why. i liked your use of language something about 'back in 63' seemed to be really original. i also think the last two lines were very powerful.
