Under the Hanging Tree

by Annwyn   May 18, 2007

I wait under the hanging tree
With bodies swaying in the breeze
Necks broke by timeless chord
Twined from the lies of humanity

Stretching out towards the horizon
A sea of red, unmoving, unchanging
Torn, scarred, stained in red
Nothing but death and remorse remaining

Mother earth could no longer hold
The crimson vitae of wars long past
She hands her death shroud to the sky
As the world below breathes its last

Clouds of chaos boil over, venting
Their angry wrath upon the plains
Ensuring no life returns anew
Hope stifled by poison rain

Life to give, but nothing to receive
Hills and valleys steeped in ancient sin
Angels descended with golden urns
A burning death contained therein

The gods forsake their people
The heavens opened up and rained down
Harsh judgment cometh and findeth thee
Within the tears of martyrs children drown

Across the vales the besmirching forms
Of world's warriors lying slain
Their blood poisoning the earth below
Ensuring life cannot begin again

Who was it that burned the heavens?
Who was it that killed the sea?
Who was it that raped the land
And condemned the world to entropy?

Selfish wars and greedy desires
Brought low the wondrous paradise
The world on which they lived
They slew with their very life

Mankind, world's cancer
Malignant and cruel and uncaring
Callous, proud Mankind, unheeding
Of warning as they walk on uncaring

But no sin goes unpunished
No deed of evil allowed to pass
Even though she slew all
They suffered earth's terrible wrath

Too late they saw their crimes
Too late they sought to repent
Only allowed to watch death
Weep in helplessness, lament

I am the last, left to observe the end
But now judgment comes for me
I am but waiting for what is deserved
Waiting under the hanging tree...
