Abandoned Stray

Whimpering he lays there, tied to the fence
The fog settling in, ever so dense
A shadow he sees, sitting up in his sleep
It is just a bird, he lays back down in a heap

His owner left him, abandoned, alone
All he ever wanted is a warm, comfortable home
His fur all ruffled, his skin all torn
He was close to his death, which no one would mourn

The chain was all rusted, the fence was all bent
but no matter how he tried, he could not make a dent
His soul tangled loosely, his presence forgot
The place where he was left, was an old vacant lot

People had passed, day in, day out
But he was still laying there after weeks, nothing left to him but doubt

Ribs on the side, tail between his legs
Frightened, alone, he wished he could beg
He would never trust humans, never again
He used to be loved, but that was back then

He did not know what he did wrong, he only tried to help
but they said it was on purpose, the tied him up, he yelped

Fresh water was gone, all that was left was the dirt
His old owners lawn and his old owners shirt
He wanted somewhere warm, somewhere other than here
He wanted somewhere to go, where there was not constant fear

He sat up, lay back down, wanting to sleep
His ears flopped around, listening for a creep
The gate suddenly squeaked, he sat up straight away
The little girls eyes, a light blue and gray

Filling with tears, she ran up to him,
gave him a hug, her eyes started to swim

Pulling, and pulling The fence gave way,
he was finally free, had a happy family

He stumbled out the gate, not wanting to look back
He was going to be okay, he was never going to attack
This girl proved beyond hope, that some humans were okay
and that some were so helpful, they would pick up a stray
