His Soul Ached

by Leah   Oct 2, 2007

He was quiet when he was born
in fact he was quiet all his life
his mom and dad never divorced
they were happy husband and wife

Years later they had two more daughters
who loved their brother more then the world
his mother would tell him to go to his bed
because at night on the couch he often curled

Although there was some problems
some insignificant fights his mother said sorry
tried to make the family right

It was nothing really big,
I mean, every family has arguements
but all those fights just went away
and it was merely back to the present

Everyone was happy, or so they thought
although the boy and his dad never talked
never biked, swam, played sports or walked.

His sisters looked up to him
his was their roll model since birth
they never once had to question
just how much their brother was worth

But his weight bothered him
so his family encouraged him to work out
he worked out everyday
more then anyone else no doubt.

He lost a lot of weight
and he really did look good
if he put his mind to it
he could accomplish anything
he could!

Then he met a girl
went to meet her one night
came home and couldn't stop talking about
how she was the most beautiful sight

They dated and he was going to propose
when she was finally eight teen
we all thought he was happy
all of his problems were left unseen.

He smiled in the day time
smiled to his girl and to his family
never let that smile fall
but yet yearning for someone to set him free

He smiled through a broken heart
a broken world, a broken touch
all the love the world had to give
in the end did not help him much

One night when his sisters fell asleep
and his mom and dad were just upstairs
he took an extension cord from the hall
and his heart began the constant terrors.

He tied one end to the rafters
and the other end to his neck
a mothers instinct kicked in later
and she decided to go and check

the dog did not bark as he had done it
his feet could easily reach the ground
there were no marks on his neck of second thoughts
he choked himself without a sound

His mother screamed for her husbund
he managed the stairs in a single leap
looked into the face of a son he didnt know
held his wife but there was no sound of his weep

woke his fifteen year old sister did the screams
and she ran from her room
upon entering the frozen place
of suicide and gloom

called 911 and she gave him CPR
her parents were too traumatized
couldn't even manage to stop shaking
let alone wipe the tears from their eyes

no one knew his soul hurt
his smile was one he knew how to fake
no one knew his utter pain
or how imensely his soul shattered and ached

they barely spoke of him at his own funeral
they mostly talked about depression
said if you ever had that pain
it was better you told someone in confession

said the funeral could have been avoided
that nobody should have been there that day
that we should be out enjoying our summer
with a boy who was no longer okay

My dad wept since he was close to the boy
since the boy was our own neighbour
he held the boys mother as she constantly shook
9 months carrying him and hours of labour.

Never seen my dad cry before
all those people in that room felt unreal
as they had called my house at 7 am
and told us of their son's ordeal

I looked into the face of a girl I knew my whole life
tried to soothe her pain even though it couldn't end
as I tried constantly to stop my own tears from falling
The loss of her brother, I tried to console my best friend

He was a prisoner of this earth
lived all those years thinking he was a mistake
calling out softly for someone to notice
that way deep down inside his lonely heart ached

his world was perfect, what happened?
He left everyone to cry
he did not leave a note at all
so nobody ever found out why
