Grocery Store Ecstasy

by sibyllene   Jan 4, 2008

I was really into smell tonight.
Usually it's touch,
and my hands rove over everything, absorbing
through my fingers, but smell....
that lemon did it in for me, and it went from there.
Ah, all those fresh foods,
all with their own smell, taste, texture, signature, BEING -
do you know what I mean?
All the variety: oranges, lemons,
peppers, avocados,
kiwis, limes,
apples, lettuces,
onions, garlics.
Each one could be savored - should be savored.

We live in a world where all these exotic miracles are here for us, in all their zest and spice and vibrancy.

And just to imagine one...
a slight peeling back of the lemon skin,
letting loose that bright, colorful,
ebullient scent...
if sun glinting off warm blue water could have a smell,
it would be that,
exactly.
Do you understand?
It seems like there's poetry in everything.
Sometimes things seem too precious to bear.
