One Last Look

by Hanna   Jan 12, 2008

Legs tucked under the worn down chair,
Crossed, heels raised, knees shake,
Eyes trace the fragile shadow of a man,
Sharp glance away to stop the ache.

A life merely started, threatened,
A life that was promised to her,
She sat by his side praying,
Just praying for a miracle to occur.

The ring that had graced her finger,
Engraved "Forever We Will Be",
Now clenched tightly in her trembling hands,
Stained with the tears of she.

"I Love you", she'd try to whisper.
But parted lips would speak no word,
She put a single hand on his,
And still hoped that he had heard.

Eyes flickered back and forth,
From her only source of hope,
The snaking lines of the machine,
Her only way to cope.

As she gripped his withered hand,
An icy touch upon her skin,
The snaking lines did flatten,
Fear gripped her from within.

She felt his body slacken,
Harsh beep rang through her ears,
Head shook in denial,
Eyes filled up with tears.

She held on to him with all her strength,
Screamed for him to wake,
But a hand had gripped her shoulder,
And from him, she did break.

Her life fell apart in front of her eyes,
Her heart felt heavy with pain,
As she took one last look forever,
And then one last look again.
