You Don't Have To 6-29-98 (Song)

by Phil Laws   Jan 21, 2008

I noticed that you're waiting
As you should until you're ready
But what is it you're rating
With virtues, so lovely
Your patience, sedating
As your calm looks for a new plea
Seeing no luminescent plating
Or physical fantasy

But, you don't have to be beautiful
To fascinate and mystify
Don't need to join a carnival
To twirl and fly and death defy
You don't have to be a fantasy
To be valued above all else
Don't need to be psychic to see
We all need love, yet lust still sells

It's not how it was seeming
But I searched and found a lot
With a truth only to dreaming
Never expecting to have caught
A friendly post for leaning
Not finding what you sought
Started emotional cleaning
And you left me, deep in thought
As I'm desperate for meaning
Though it's the only thing I've got

So, you don't have to have an answer
To think it through and get the gist
Don't need to be a dancer
To twirl and twist and flow like mist
You don't have to be a genius
To ponder, patch it, make or catch it
Don't have to be a jailer to free us
When two hearts seem to match it

Never reason to relent
But, defensively, I tried
To be where my feelings went
So that I could also hide
Forgetting what it meant
To make you finally decide
Haunted by every scent
And each lie that we supplied
But every time I held you
It seemed I knew for sure
And though my heart misspelled you
My feelings grew more pure

'N' you know, you don't have to be beautiful
To fascinate and mystify
Don't need to join a carnival
To twirl and fly and death defy
You don't have to be a fantasy
To be valued above all else
Don't need to be psychic to see
That nothing this pure ever sells

Yet it's rarely for free
Or even there to see
Such as crowns and rings
Although we've done away with kings
Royalty is what we caught
Finding each thing we sought
Now you only have to be
Yourself to be lovely

So you see, you don't have to have an answer
To think it through and get the gist
Don't need to be a dancer
To twirl and twist and flow like mist
You don't have to be a poet
To please someone's ears with phrase
Don't have to act to show it
It's just a gaze, but it conveys
Those feelings that began to raise
And you don't have to show it or say
You just have to know it's loves way
