i also once received a piece of coal, but at least that was humorous. the light switch was intended as a legitimate gift.

It is an old Scottish tradition to take a lump of coal when you go 'first footing" First footing is what you do right after the New Year arrives...visiting your neighbours and sharing a drink with them etc. Coal was considered a symbol of good luck.
