Day of Silence?

Did anyone here participate in the day of silence today? For everyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, the day of silence is an annual event in which some people don't talk for the school day, to protest the silence lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people face, because of our intolerant society. This is the first time I did it, and I was really shocked! I've never heard so many homophobic comments in my life! I think the people took advantage of the fact we couldn't retort. For example, in engish today I had to speak because of an oral report and when I sat down the kid behind me said "Oh god Lorraine! you talked....how could you let all those little fags down?"It was so hard to not say anything. I had to give several non-verbal, but rude, "shut-ups" to a few idiots in my school. When I was walking with a friend who was also participating this guy in another grade came up and said "wow two lesbos! can I tape you two f*cking each other?" And I live in the very liberal land of Massachusetts. So I want to know how the day of anyone else who participated (or saw other people participating) went? I hope better than mine....

Wow I havent heard of the 'Day of silence'...It sounds really nice. I mean the concept must be very appreciative to people who fall under it's category. Yet, there will always have to be stupid people in the world...and I am sorry for that. I'm sorry they gave you a bad day. You did a good thing.

I heard of it...I didnt do it though. Only the GSA(Gay Straight Allience) club at my school did it to make a point about who they are and are proud of who they are. My friends did it, I supported them and many other kids and teachers did as well.

I didn't participate, but I heard of it last year.

I might of thought of it if I knew what day it was on.

I've heard of it but never participated. Only about a handful of students choose to take the silence. Unfortunatly they did get weird looks but I didn't hear any comments. But then again the people who participated, I don't know them very well....

heres a web site for those who don't know about it. http://www.dayofsilence.org/

Last year there was hardly anyone doing the day of silence. But this year the gsa advertised a bit, and set up a sign up booth in the cafeteria. So there were ALOT of people being silient. At lunch (table of about 20) there were only 2 people talking. I guess I was more shocked from the rude comments, because I'd NEVER heard them before in our school. Oh well, what can you do?
