I'm for and against. completely against a ban but for a certain amount of control. noone needs assault rifles and pistols are questionable. there should be a more in depth analysis of people who want them. all they do is a 1 minute background check. i don't think it should be as easy to get a gun as it is. it should at least take more time. but why should people who hunt be deprived of their pastime? besides, it states in the constitution that we have "the right to bear arms".

While I in no way ever see owning or using a gun in my future, I know we will never be able to ban them and keep them out of our communities. It should however be much more difficult to get a fire arm and those who are caught with illegal firearms or committing crimes using a gun, should be dealt with a lot more stringently. A weapon used in self defense is one thing, a weapon used with malicious intent is another.

I think they should be banned, yes Bob you've got a very valid point by saying that people who really want to kill, will find other methods to kill, but whats so wrong with making people work a little harder to kill? Without guns there could be no drive-bys, no accidental shootings, and would show the public that a sincere effort to cut down on violence and crime is being made.

Just out of curiosity do you know about the first bootleggers? Those people that illegally smuggled alcohol into cities so people could drink? That was just a harmless substance in a bottle. But now those bootleggers are going to be arming criminals with more than just some substance of choice. They are going to be supplying a weapon that is unrivaled by anything other than another gun. So if we do ban guns to the law abiding citizens, you can kiss cleaner streets goodbye and welcome back organized crime with open arms.

Hey if they control Guns, what's to say that can't stop them from using Knifes, shanks, machettes...etc.

I abhor Guns, but I do believe in the protection of one's household...But I would rather use a bat, then a gun.

Ban guns and watch the Black Market bloom. Also it would create a breed of more intelligent criminals. In Australia our laws are pretty tight, we can't even own antique guns. They all had to be handed in and destroyed along with several hundred years of history. Kind of sad, hey?

  • TracyM

I'm "against" guns all the way.

I don't believe in them. Even those that are used for what people refer to as "hobbies". Guns are bad. There are enough bad people in this world without giving them amunition to be even more badder.

You just have to see the news, to know that Guns should be banned. xx

I agree with Dead Soul on top.

It is okay if it's in your own home but have it locked up. My aunt and them have a gun in their home but ALWAYS keeps it locked up all the time, its a hunting gun. I guess they'd use it in case if someone was trying to attack them or if a bear is found inside or is a threat to them. They live out in the country and that so yeah they have a right to use it because when they do have a problem the police wont be able to get there fast enough and something might go terrible wrong.

But on the streets, a big no-no!!! That's what cops come in. They're suppose to protect us and keep us from harm.

Not making a good point or anything but I have so many reasons why we shouldn' t have guns in the streets that I can;t all remember them.

Guns are there to kill and it would make it much more difficult TO kill if they were banned, but obviously the government don't care and let the for overrule the against. Plus people will smuggle them in and sell them on the streets like said before, so really you can't escape it. No matter what there will be death, but banning guns could either make things better or things worse, like robbers attacking women and them having no secure defense if they were to have previously owned a gun.
You can't really get a BETTER way off now that we HAVE introduced guns.

I think it should be as difficult as possible to kill another human being, and guns make it very easy.

Many here have said that there are thousands of responsible gun owners who shouldn't have their rights abused because of some crazy killers.

Hmm, you mean the right to own something that is designed to kill other beings? Should that ever be a right? Knives are not meant to killing, they are meant to cutting things, they can be abused sure, but how many people can one person kill with a knife, not many, unless they go to extreme measures , like serial killers.

Bottom line for me, everyone at some point in their lives, feels the urge to kill someone, might be social pressure, might be someone they love has been hurt....if they had a gun they could do alot more damage, which is a bad thing.

The constitutional right to bear arms, well that was when Americans had the balls to perhaps actually stand up against their government and say No...that won't happen anymore, ever...so why still use that as a arguement point?

"Uh..we have the right to defend ourselves, our homes...uh from other people with guns...Uh...we have the right to defend our country...uh..from foreign or domestic invaders, uh, with guns...uh.....honey, what time is American Gladiators on."

I`m not for banning them completely, but I think there should definately be more control over who can own one ,I don`t think a person that has a history of mental illness like the one who just gunned down 32 college kids should be able to walk in to a shop and walk out with a gun, all in the same day.Maybe they would get one illegally anyway but I think the government has the obligation to at least try to insure the safety of innocent people.

  • Jason Rainey

I am against total gun control. I mean there has to be regulations and rules surrounding the conditions and situations in which a gun can be used and owned. Not everyone should own a gun. There are some major issues with different types of guns also. The US was founded on the basis of freedom to speak, do, and live happily. The right to own a gun is a major part of our freedom here. To each his own and if you do wrong with a gun then your rights should be taken away. If you are an upstanding citizen then sure by all means, buy all the guns you want and shoot them all day, just don't point them at me.

  • Kevin

The USA might have been founded on the right to bear arms, but that was a long time ago, and things have changed since then, dramatically, it's a pity the Goverment and the general population haven't evolved their ideas and caught up with what makes sense.#

Bottom line for me, the only reason guns are still easy to procure, is because no politician has the balls or ovaries to take the issue on, even though they must know it's bad for the country and the people who live in it.

In Britain, guns are far more strictly controlled, and guess what, as if by magic, almost no one is ever shot and killed in thie country, no in the numbers you guys are wiping each other out.

What is the confusion about this issue? I mean really, screw your heritage of killing each other, it's time to wake up and put away the toys, cause lots of kids are getting hurt. America needs to grow up with regards it's gun laws.

  • Phantasmagoria

There are about three hundred million people in the United States, I think. There are only a few thousand who don't own a gun.

  • omgitsmina

Guns are okay I guess for defence, but I think there should be tighter regulations when getting approved for one.

  • Vanessa

The right to bear arm! You can have my gun when you pry it from my cold dead fingers! I am against gun control for the simple fact, that the people out there that have no reguard to the law, are not going to care if it is illegal, and they will be the ones that think they hold all the power. i don't believe that guns kill people, people kill people. But I do believe that you never point a loaded or an unloaded gun at anyone unless yo uintend to use it, and guns should be keept in a locked gun closet so kids can't get acess to them. A gun so only be a method to protect ourself, our homes, and our families, and perjaps to hunt for food, but other than that I can sse no point in owning one.

I read through some more of these and it seems as if people are trying to create a Utopian society. do guns make it easier to kill people? yes. but if you ban them will something replace it? yes. 'need' (for lack of a better word) is the father of most inventions. if people couldn't get a hold of guns (which they will be able to even with a ban) they would find something else that may be even worse. i would personally rather live a free life with risk. that's just me though "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Benjamin Franklin

I am the dude from Britain.

And What do i say now? I say if you are going try to defend Gun ownership by saying it improves the crime rate, well, I would love to see you back that up with some evidence, And not just some town in texas.

And mate, just because I don't live in your country, my opinions are still valid, after all America's social policies effect the entire world, and we're all part of the same species, so please don't be telling me a little bit of geography lessens my points.

Guns to me, when owned by regular people, are useful only because, as someone else rightly said, they allow the satisfaction of a need, usually the theft of something. If you have a society where people don't have a need to kill for money/drugs etc then guns become useless.

So maybe I'm going about this the wrong way..rather than try to argue against guns, I should be kicking the crap out of the reaons they are used, the contributing factors, generally speaking.

  • icarus

Kevin ^^"If you have a society where people don't have a need to kill for money/drugs etc then guns become useless."

that comes too close to a Utopian society. it will never exist. its a wonderful idea, a goal to aspire to, but it has no place in reality.

I don't want the people to be able to buy guns. I don't think the police should use guns either. The British way. Crime and gang violence isn't less for them either (not really), but there are less friendly fire and cases with cops shooting civilians due to this (Unfortunately corrupt cops are everywhere, but that's not what I'm really talking about, I'm not anti-cop, at all). There are lots of other methods cops could use without resorting to firearms.

Anti-gun laws, however, are unpopular because hunting is a favorite pasttime for a lot of people. Even our Vice President.

  • JENNINGS

Yes i agree with you. I dont think anyody other that the milatary should be able to carry firearm....the police n england dont use them so i think other countries can do the same thing>>>>>

I think theres a big difference between controlling and banning . Everyday citizens with no history of violence or mental illness should have the freedom to buy guns for sport or hunting, they have proven themselves responsible but background checks and waiting periods ,I think are a sensible thing .

I think guns should be completely banned.

None for hunting, none for police, thus none for people.

I don't know if this will help, anything at all, but guns, are very chilling to me.

Let me tell you about Guntown USA. It is Kennesaw Ga. right here in my homestate. I am sure the majority of you will agree that Atlanta has an unbelievably high crime rate. Well, Kennesaw is only a little north of there and many of the people that live there work in Atl. Point being, Kennesaw adopted a mandantory gun ownership for the heads of household. This was in response to a handgun ban in Illinois. At first it was expected that the little town of Kennesaw would be like the Wild West having shootouts to settle disputes. The town has proved this not to be true. The crime rate has significantly dropped. Yet, in Illinois the town that had a handgun ban crime rate significantly rose an exceptional amount. If the criminals know that where they are going to commit a crime they may encounter a gun, they may have second thoughts.

Blind fool? Who are you trying to impress with your ganster talk? Homies busting caps in peoples asses? You sound like a kid who has listened to far too many Eminem albums!

I bet if you ever got close to a real live shooting with death and blood for real, you'd change your tune real fast and start pushing for a gun ban and tofu burgers in Macdonalds. I don't get it man I really don't. It's almost like people want to kill each other.

Join the army if you like guns so much, be with your own kind...people who kinda want to kill other people and get paid to be violent.

And one more time blind fool, don't tell me that because i live in another country, my opinions on the state of yours aren't valid, that is really stupid. The world hates America right now, especially the Bush Administration. If Britian legalized cannabalism, I bet you would have something to say about it....we are one world, a global community, interconnected without a doubt.

So quit it on the cross continent opinion smashing...sometimes you have to be outside something to see the truth.

    Word up dawg.
