Freedoms...

Do you think freedom of expression is needed and should it be applied to all?

  • Michael D Nalley

Yes I do, even though a closed mouth gathers no foot, there are many ways we may express ourselves without being condescending, May be diplomacy is a skill that can't hurt but it sometimes limits expression.

  • Noir

So do you think that every group deserves to be heard...?

Everybody has the right to contribute a verse to the song of life.

I remember being frustrated by competing with all the distractions in this age of communication. When my wife was not incarcerated I found a simple conversation where we could communicate and express ourselves to be priceless I seem to look at her expressions differently now that it cost $1.50 for 15 minutes. For some reason I enjoy expressing my thoughts on a discussion board to strangers more than the slow communication of letters to her.

I can't resist posting this bastardized quote from a member of this site that posted under the name JHarrison
"Entering a debate in a discussion forum here is like competing in the Special Olympics, win or lose you are still regarded."

  • Alex Marlatt

I don't think 'freedom' worth nearly as much as most Americans think it is.

A man doesn't much care if he is free or not as long as he can feed his family and have a decent future.
There is no such thing as 'perfect freedom' anyways.

"Entering a debate in a discussion forum here is like competing in the Special Olympics, win or lose you are still regarded"

Lol...Micheal I don't think Jharrison said that, it was JPM and the last word is "retarded" according to him...

    Lol...

Of course, at least...of course until we get into specifics :)

'Retarded' makes more sense. What happened to this member? He sounds like my kinda guy.

Now that you mention it Noir
it does seem that JPM was not known to place a great value on political correctness

Freedom is everything. But freedom incurs responsibility. That is why many fear it.

And, yes, for everybody. Because, even if they maybe wrong, tasteless, and offensive, I may still want to hear it. It might be interesting.

  • Kevin

JPM was not a great member Angelina, whatever you might think.

You and others may have found him amusing in a transitory thrill kind of a way, but that is easy for you to say because you had no responsibility on this site. You never had to deal with the backlash of complaints we recieved about him posting heartless comments on peoples poems, spamming the boards and being generally offensive without provocation.

His spelling and grammar were very good, and his writing was interesting, that does not balance out the trouble he caused, not in the slightest.

But like I said, what would any of you know about this.

As for the topic, which is surely related to the recent mod posting on not being rude, I think the most balanced answer is obvious.

We should have the right to express anything we want personally, but within reason, and within special reason on a public website where we all agreed to be polite to others as much as we can.

Just because you have the right to say anything you want does make it right to do so, you must temper your rights with morals and understandings of how your words can effect the right of others to live without being attacked for their views. I'm saying this in the full knowledge that I have attacked people on this site for their views, usually religious ones, but I'm talking about an ideal here..we are all going to slip from it...which is where gentle warnings come in.

Lets not kick this out of proportion.

Freedom of expression is one of those things that no one will ever agree on whole heartedly... Theoretically we all possess the right to freedom of expression (legally) but yet there are still laws in place which contradict this... just try calling a police officer a "pig" or using profanities in public over a loudspeaker or something... Im pretty sure you will end up in cuffs or with a severe warning... So what does this "Freedom of Expression" get us? Well... pretty much any socially acceptable expression - therefore its not freedom of expression at all now, is it?

It basically tells us "express yourself freely (in compliance with the small print)".

  • Noir

    Lol...

If people had the freedom of speech and expression, to which everyone has the "right" to...Wouldn't people like religious fundamentalists and paedophile activists have that right as well...

I find it a double standard...

"I still liked JPM. People will always complain, Kevin."

On the topic of freedom of expression I am going to state that in all fairness that JPM brought out the best and the worst in people

I stand corrected if I ever gave someone credit for his humorous quotes, or ever misquoted him

I will never forget the time I seemed to have got his goat in a heated debate, when a young lady that was as spirited as Angelina stepped in.

    Kaitlin Kristina

    "Saucer of milk anyone?

Seriously, why engage if he's such a retard?

How about we get back to topic: Drugs.

    Anyone need a tranquilizer?"

Retard was one of JPM'S favorite words as I recall. When he was losing an argument he would call his apposition that many times.

    Kaitlin steps in again
"Michael, seriously, I suggest not participating any longer.

JPM could keep going, and going, and going, and going, like the Energizer bunny on speed (keeping things on topic).

With that I'll bow out, because this is absolutely none of my business (besides the fact it's a public forum)."

At this point JPM was enjoying what he felt was a victory, but was not finished with his humiliating remarks, when he made the fatal error of telling Kaitlin Kristina to shut up

Her response was more hilarious than anything I can remember from JPM

"Ever thought of going into law?

At the same time though, insults that require you to reach to middle school status ("shut up") probably wouldn't end up scoring points with anyone unless it's a courtroom governed by 5th graders sniffing on magic markers.

Although you'd be in good company.

I know you hardly ever have to look up words, but I don't believe you're familiar with a very simple, yet important one: tact.

Please refrain from beating dead bodies if you can find the maturity in yourself to do so.

Although I do have faith in you and your intelligence, so it doesnt have to be too hard."

Too much moderation of expression would have prevented me from ever reading this masterpiece of humour

"Did JPM ever get bored when he reads your posts Micheal...Lol."

Probably so, kaitlin was still going when Kevin Murray locked the thread

Maybe kaitlin was the sugar coated one and Kevin let her think it was me to keep her from opening another can of whoop ass

"I'm locking this poor excuse for a debate.

Now kids, no doubt you will meet each other again on the sacred virtual grounds of these forums. Please try to stay on topic, or at least keep your squabbles to e-mail...i'm sick of this repetitive vindictive crap, and i mean both of you, the sugar coated one and the plain one.

    Jeez."

One of my pet peeves are the mighty intellectuals, that believe if they present a lie eloquently and sound in grammar, that it has something to do with how true it is.
Politicians are usually masters at this. I generally do get passionate about my convictions. The clinical intellectuals prefer the term emotive cognition as if a person's mind could be programmed with words. This may be true to an extent if you can convince the subject they are in need of alteration. I prefer to write from my heart and soul mostly. I believe that if expressions of doubt, despair, and hate can hurt, then expression of faith hope and love can heal

"On another note - Michael, Kaitlin always liked JPM"
Yes I believe she did. The quotes I used were actual pastes from the archives, and it was only a few days latter that JPM won the poetry contest and kaitlin started the JUST PLAIN COGRADULATIONS THREAD

"Congrats JPM, I loved the poem and I think it's great that people are starting to recognize you as not only a smart, big balled and argumentative man, but as a great writer with a lot to offer."

    Great job. I loved it.

And to all the other winners, congratulations as well. Everyone did a great job :)"

I believe JPM was DONE WITH THIS STUPID SITE and that account had been suspended
Some moderators told me that JPM would not engage anyone he did not like

On another note he had me on a best poets list when he posted under DONE WITH THIS STUPID SITE
I believe he was lit also

    P.S.
The poem that won the contest was one of the few he had posted that was not so vulgar as to be on the front page of this site

Lenny Bruce was mild in contrast to most of his post

To the last foolish child I must admit that I rarely enjoyed being humiliated by JPM
Looking back at that old thread I realize that his tactic of intimidating his adversary by pointing out grammar errors did make me more self-conscious about my post. I still got a long way to go, but I see I have improved, because of his seemingly rude criticism

Michael do you ever turn off...JPM is gone, I personally found the guy morose, and fact is I love playing with him, but now isn't the time to be highlighting the fact that he used to call people "retards" because fact is, he was mostly calling himself one...

    Far canal...

Are we still on this topic? :)

Ok in answer to someone's post up there ^^ I believe it was Nori (suprise surprise), yeah you're spot on that everyone deserves to have right of freedom of expression - that does mean the people that we might regard as being not "socially acceptable" (and as much as I dont agree with society's blantant disregard to tolerance past their own deformed and polished noses... I'd have to agree with the disinclusion of groups of people getting off on things such as child pornography etc)... however there is one thing to have "freedom of expression" and another thing to carry that freedom out past the lines of the law and act on them.

I could have the right to say (for illustrative purposes only) "I dont think gay members of society should be allowed to get married, adopt or reap the same benefits as a married couple of a heterosexual nature"... or... "anyone committing murder deserves to die at the hands of the justice system"... its my right to think that (once again - Im using this ONLY as an example not quoting a personal opinion). Its one thing for me to think whatever I want to think, its my God-given right. But its another if I were to start wielding a gun shooting convicted murderers as the next step to my "expression". Expressions and actions are different.

After all this serious posting... I think I need some food.

"Michael do you ever turn off...JPM is gone,"

Sorry that I got so far over your head Noir. Sometimes I over estimate the depth of members of this site because this is PQ But it seems not all poets have the intelligence to understand what a banned member has to do with freedom of expression.

Why do I feel like lieutenant Dan when Forrest Gump said ..but you aint got no legs Lutenit Dan?????????

Yes, NoIr a banned member is gone, that was my point

How does it feel to be humiliated?

  • Noir

That was nice Micheal...Your condesending insult, would actually work if you weren't so up your own self...But hey I guess you always knew that JPM was a fanboy of your great work...Please!

In your own "bastardization" of what once was, or what "never" was...Seeing as you clearly mistake quotes from even members of this site..

    {Mimics Cheech and Chong}

    Funny....No!

You failed to actually illustrate that JPM was actually the symbol of "freedom of expression" you claim he is...What with your overselling yourself, you quoting other people's ideas and some of those quotes aren't even accurate...

It would seem to me that you have said nothing but shamelessly plug yourself as an intellectual and a great poet...

So please...Quote some more inaccurate quotes..I'm sure I'll be too bored to read them..

    But don't worry...I'll skim 'em'

Oh and you did ask me a question: How does it feel to be humilated?

Well when was I ever humiliated?

Now here's my question to you: Will you ever write one post without stealing another man's ideas?

  • Michael D Nalley

"Now here's my question to you: Will you ever write one post without stealing another man's ideas?"

Why don't you take a deep breath and Google "Chemical Balance Through Spirituality" so you can tell me whom I stole that idea from?

  • Noir

I'm sorry Michael...Another one of your shameless plugs...

Sorry but no thank you, I think you're book is something I do not need at this precise moment, seeing as I have the "freedom" to do so...

    Ha Ha!

    Lol...

Well it's called manners Michael...But I suppose, you never say please, thank you, Excuse me or Sorry when you speak...Now do you?

But ofcourse I wouldn't expect it from someone who I feel has no class..

I feel sorry for you...Please accept my deepest condolences on your classless argumentative slant.

  • Noir

Now that this deviation of retorts is over...Let's move on to the discussion at hand...I think Michael is word processing his retort...Poor fellow! But let's get to the discussion at hand.

Do you think there should be a limit to the freedoms we have?

  • Michael D Nalley

As Rosanna Rosannadana would probably say it just goes to show you if it is not one thing it is just another. If it is not a tiny little booger on the end of your nose to annoy you, there is always some tiny little hypocrite whining that he has the right to be heard so he can lower someones self-esteem

This is what kaitlin who is obscurely fading had to say to such a hypocrite

"It's like everyone hugged and made up.

    That's the P&Q way.

Anyway, I got rather carried away last night, Ismail, and the truth is that I'm sorry. I was projecting the other problems in my life upon you, and it was unfair, because I've been gone for a long time and allowed myself to be lit up for little reasoning at all. I made the false presumption that everything was the same, when in fact everyone has grown and everyone has been learning.

But the mental gymnastics of the verbal combat was probably good for both of us.

You are a very smart guy, Ismail. That we can all attest to.

And Kevin knows I'd marry him, because he's just the greatest ever.

And that would be me, kissing ass, but believing every word :).

So who are the elves at this point? Bob, Kevin, and?"

Expressions can be negative or positive

I "love" you because you are full of it

  • Noir

    What!!

It took you all that time to search for something Kaitlin has said...

My God...Michael you're a piece of work!! You're a master of copying another person's ideas...

God...You are someone who needs to get off the high horse, and start smelling some old socks...You used to do that, but now you moved up to another extremity, and you should bring yourself down...My man!!

    Funny!!!

I was given the name Michael, who is questionably like God, and taught that I was created in His image and likeness. This may explain why I always seem to become the topic, when I freely express myself,or do not. Do you see what I don't mean?lol

The D is an initial for Dale which is a small valley, not always a dark one when the sun shines
Nalley is indeed a poor man, whom as you say, should strive to be poor in spirit and censor himself from egocentric ideals

  • Noir

    Lol...

You have a very high opinion of yourself Michael...Ever heard of the word "Humble"...

It can be eaten as a pie, and from what I can see you'd love another piece of pie...

But the again, you were taught that you was created in the image and likeness of God...Does that mean in the likeness and image of you? Because if it is...No man should pray to that every night.
