In subdued shine

by Arunansu   Dec 2, 2007

[ Edited version of "The floor lamp". Hope you will like it.]

Upright column
of a floor lamp
bear motifs
intricately furrowed
beneath the canopy

It was a Wedding gift for Mom,
kept beside our black & white TV set

Scratching crayons
along the notches
my juvenile eventides were bathed
in the subdued shine

Under it's fabric shade
father's evening read
his newspaper stack
writing desk, penholders,

his ailing nights
medicines
nurses
hypodermic syringe

emptiness

I no longer use the lamp
yet it stands tall
with the coil wrapped up,
knotted round it's neck.
