When I was a Leaf

by Maple Tree   Feb 5, 2016

I became a leaf
upon the top of a tree,
where the breezes
created a smile upon
my soul.

The tips of a winged bird
tickled my spine,
allowing all senses
to feel nothing less
than beautiful.

Clouds formed tears upon
my cheek, raining memories
of endless, shadowed storms-
darkness came as thunder called
unto me.

I became nothing other than
a leaf upon the highest tree,
floating downward, watching
friends gather in clusters
of color.

Landing upon a soiled bed of moss
was where I truly knew the meaning
of life, passerby's imprinted markings
as I clung to the sole of their shoes.

I resided upon the roadside
where decay became my true
design, transformation.

Pieces of my broken heart
mated within a compost of
seeds, creating rebirth.

Out of darkness,
the moon and sun-

I stand strong, not as a leaf
but a Tree....

    Hello Andrea,

this is a beautiful 'full circle' poem. I had to stifle a laugh as the fallen leaf landed up on a shoe. But, the last laugh is on me for he became compost and then became absorbed into a future tree. Now that is what I call a happy ending.

    Well done, a lovely write.

    Take care,

    Michael

Wow. Andrea this is so beautiful. I have a passion for trees and it is amazing to watch. Trees come in so many different shapes, sizes and colors down to the branches and leafes, but it's the healthy trunk making the tree standing strong. Take care and be blessed.

This is a brilliant story of a leaf's journey! And your descriptive prowess is evidenced here; the imagery is simply sumptious!
