Inside Sears Tower

by Poet on the Piano   Mar 21, 2009

Crowding into a capacious elevator,
Elbow to elbow, eye to eye,
Climbing up to the highest floor,
More levels than imaginable.

Everyone's ears quickly popping,
Suddenly the door rolls on open,
While eager eyes search about,
Extinguishing their desire with the sight.

Below lies the whole layout of Chicago,
Every road, each tree, naked to the eye,
City people appearing like running ants,
Anxious to arrive at their destination.

Hundreds of proud standing skyscrapers,
Each with its own individual style,
Some wider or thinner, soaring to the heavens,
Entrancing and captivating to all viewers.

Cameras of many sorts flash one after another,
Little children squeal excitedly to their parents,
A breathtaking scene, to much to take in so fast,
Overwhelmed by how everything shrunk.

Fifteen minutes later, groups start to depart,
Unwillingly, for they wish to spend more time,
But there is always other days of the year,
To come once again and visit Sears Tower.

Our eighth grade at school took a trip to Chicago on March 20, and the first place we stopped at was the Sears Tower. It was really amazing and incredible. I wrote this poem on the way back from our trip, we were riding on a bus late at night. Thanks to all who have read this, take care!

Though I've never been up the Sears Tower, your poem took me there. Your poem vividly evoked the feelings and anticipation I would have going up on the elevator and finally seeing the panorama on top. Brings me back many years ago when I went to the top of the Prudential Building in Boston.

Ive never been to Chicago long enough to experience the beauty of it.. but it is a very gorgeous city. I loved the very vivid, clear description of being in the Sears Tower.. It makes me want to visit it someday and look over the big city just like you did. I'm sure it was quite the fun experience, and beautiful as well. The St. Louis arch is just as amazing.. I recommend you visit that someday! The overlook of St. Louis is gorgeous!

Well done.. great job putting the reader in YOUR position, making them feel this moment very clearly.

    MaryAnne,

You worded this so beautifully, I could almost see it all in front of me. It certainly made me wish to visit this tower myself too!

    *hugs*
