Going Broke

by Inside the Liar   Sep 16, 2009

So this is how it ends:
arms folded resolutely
across heaving chest,
shaky smile on lips,
unshed tears leaking out,
refusing to be blinked away.

I never meant to take the twinkle
out of your eyes.

And now you stand before me;
broken down and trying desperately
to put yourself back together
before we part ways -
I'd hoped to stay,
if not friends, then at least -
not enemies.

If I could go back to that first day...
I would.

It hurts to see you hurting
but even more to know
I can't make it any better
since I'm the one
who made it bad.

If we knew a way to save us,
we might still be okay.

But I guess this will be how it ends:
crossed arms, heaving chest,
muffled smile, escaping tears.
Neither of us will
leave here today
unscathed.
I hope you can heal from
whatever I've done to you.

And I hope you understand this time
why it is I can't look back.

If we meet again someday
I can think fondly of you.
Can you do the same?
If you can't, I'll try to understand.
You'll make it where you're headed, love;
I've never doubted that.
You'll be the star.
And I'll just be that girl
you used to love.

Because I went broke believing
that the simple should be hard.
