A Lifetime Isn't Long Enough

by Poet on the Piano   Jun 26, 2010

I live in this tiny part of Indiana
where everyone waves when passing by
whether on farm equipment or simply
riding on a mountain bike under dusk,
friendship is always welcomed here.
Neighbors look out their window,
after light settles and dinner plates
shine like the falling sun,
before sighing into their bedsheets;
they care enough to make sure
twilight is silent as it should be.
I guess I would call this country living
though I do reckon with every bone
quite a few automobiles speed
on our 30- mile road zone,
green gems constantly remind me
I am among nature's finest royalty.
Capturing my whims are the fields
when golden wheat rustles,
making you want to join them.
I could write an entire novel
dedicating the essence of my heart
to my one true home forever,
but in these words
I hope more than recognition
will be handed out,
for my home doesn't carry just honor
but security, family, and lots of loving.
On the early fall days a soft mist
sometimes hovers
upon newly mowed lawn.
These are hushed moments
and I take each breath in
savoring fresh sweet air.
Deer leap far past
our dark and deep ditch,
into crops that make your body
itch for a single run straight through.
I wouldn't change places
with anyone from anywhere
because where I come from
is where my soul shall find rest:
dancing by streetlights
in the middle of a rain shower,
swinging with tree branches
while humming to some jazz,
spraying our plants jubilantly,
and even composing a song
that creation can echo.
I will always defend
my poetic shield,
crafted from the haven
I had always dreamed of,
there is no place like home.

- Dedicated to my small hometown that I love with all my heart: Arcola, IN.
