One Step Away

by ImTheGirl   Jan 7, 2016

I'm one step away from being an alcoholic
One step away from giving up all hope
I'm one step away from throwing in the towel
Just how do I begin to cope

Everyone tells you to be strong
But please explain what that means
How can you be strong when you're in pain
Nothing is at all is as it seems

On the surface I am awesome!
Smiling from ear to ear
But on the inside, everything is coming apart
I'm drowning in my own tears

I'm one step away from saying f... it
What do I give a care anyway
Life has not been the same since you left
What I would have given to have you stay

I'm one step away from running away
And coming back just isn't a logical choice
Without you, there's nothing to run back to
I'm weak, I don't have a voice

I'm one step away from succumbing to the demons
The ones that just won't get out my head
The ones that are convincing me that life is too hard
So why should I not just give up instead

I'm one step away from admitting I need help
And falling down on my knees
The pain is heavy and the night is long
Won't someone just help me... please

    Hello,

I love the message. The message about the first step to beating alcoholism is admitting to have an addiction. The first step is the hardest.

I like the format, rhyme and repetition of 'Im one step away from...' this helped pound the emotional struggle with denial and the cusp of admission real.

    Well done,

    Take care,

    Michael

I am a big fan of repetition in poems - I find it very power, and your work here is not exception. Cheers to beating alcoholism; cheers to succumbing to it.
