Be careful who you tell to be strong

by ImTheGirl   Jul 23, 2019

I feel the weight on my shoulders as people tell me to be strong
Don’t they know that I’ve been strong for too long
Don’t they know that all the smiles and laughs have been forced
My mask is starting to fall off
Being strong all the time makes for long nights
Nights I’m not sure I want to wake from
Be careful who you tell to be strong
You don’t know how long they’ve been strong for...

It’s hard to give advice to others, but somehow we just feel like cheering someone who is facing difficulties. If you don’t mind me asking, what can be said then if not be strong? Is it better to just listen to someone’s difficulties and remain quiet?

Those question popped to my mind after reading your poem. Thank you for sharing. Keep writing.

For me personally, I think it's better to just be there with the person. When my brother died, I had so many people tell me to be strong because I was all my parents had left. I feel like I sucked up a lot of emotions and never really grieved because I had to be strong for my parent. Overtime it built up.

This poem made me think. I always say 'be strong' to anyone who faces difficulties. Hmm.. i might have hurt somebody without me knowing.
