Space Out, Look Up

by mike   Sep 8, 2018

the world is ever changing
nothing will ever be the same
the odds so astronomical
it’s a miracle it exists at all.
time goes by and leaves forever fall
tumble to the ground in their last great adventure
the tides will rise to land and retreat to sea
in the ever ticking clock of nature.
and people will never truly notice
these miracles we see every day
as we fly by caught up in lives,
always late, distrait
so in a rush thinking everyone must hear me
hear what i have to say.
distracted, enraged, indecent, afraid
angry at someone else for the pettiest of things
the he said she said
the look at me,
the look at you.
monkey see monkey do.

But I feel if we took a minute to stop
and watch as the leaves as they drop
we might feel the excited charge in the air
as they return to the earth they fed all year.
and from that we might realize
how small and entwined we really are.
but in a way
that reality is very clear
there is nothing between us
but walls of wood and steel.
we’re all really animals,
just some live without fear.
so take a moment and think about it
humble yourself and listen
had the past gone slightly different
we’d be the ones up there in the trees
how then would we feel
as the same leave fall and tides turn,
we’ve become the primitive.
monkey see
monkey do.

I posted this yesterday, and in a moment of weakness and sadness took it down with a feeling of not being good enough and a bad friend to someone I care about deeply, who ironically enough was the one who was glad i did it in the first place. So here it is again, maybe to stay this time:

Couple different ideas in this one came together to kinda meld into one. This is from a few years ago when I was heading into work someone flew by me on the highway and I noticed as they did that the leaves were starting to fall, one of my favorite times of year. I think this is about the time when a good friend of mine passed too. he was always saying to slow down, pace yourself and look up to see the beauty around us as he would sing to wake us up every morning, I hated it then but what i wouldn’t give for it now.

So take your time and slow down,
look up at the sky instead of at the ground
see the beauty of what surrounds us.
One day you’ll be gone
don’t miss this time to look around,
take it in while you’ve got the chance.

“Oh what a beautiful morning, Oh what a beautiful day, I’ve got a beautiful feeling, Everything’s going my way.”

Sharing your soul with the world, even just here to so many strangers, is a great kind of brave.
