Against the Grain

by Jacob Davis   Mar 19, 2008

Here I stare into the mirror,
Hoping something different shows.
With each and every day,
I don't recognize this man,
this man who stares at me so longingly.
He Wishes he saw something more.
He wishes what he saw would start to grow.
This idle wish could seem like forever.

For if only I knew.
For if only I could understand what he feels,
then one of us could make some sense.

There he stares back through the mirror,
back at me, wanting more.
Idly waiting for something to come along.
We've both been waiting for so long.
We've both sang this same old song
for what would feel like forever.

For if only one of us knew.
For if only someone told us who was who,
then one of us would have the courage to grow.
Which one of us will take the step?
Which one of us is smart enough,
to make a change and save the life?

My reflection stops, dead, still.
Reaches forward, against my will.
I find myself struggling at this site,
My arm follows and mimics him.
The man, my arm, he makes a fist.
Draws back a balled up fist, his face is still.
Throws his strength into the glass.
I shatter to the floor.
