The Song Played On

by AmberSherrellxxIve Been Sitting Here Trying To Find Myselfxx   Apr 4, 2008

He turned on the radio
A little too soon
His heart nearly stopped
When he heard that certain tune

Without a conscience thought
He was singing along
His sad eyes shut tight
And he was back where he belonged

Strumming gentle chords
Singing her to sleep
Wrapped up in her arms
Her heart was his to keep

The song played on
He pictured her face
Memories spinning backwards
To a different time and place

He saw the tears on her cheeks
The ache in her eyes
The quiver of her lips
As she mumbled her good-bye

She walked away forever
And he just let her go
Why she chose to leave
He'll never even know

But somewhere far away
She's holding his little boy
Knowing that nine months ago
She felt everything but joy

She didn't want to leave him
But she didn't have a choice
Every time that song plays
She can still hear his voice

He was strumming gentle chords
He was singing her to sleep
She was wrapped up in his arms
Her heart was his to keep

She stared at the sunrise
He waited for dawn
Longing for the pain to fade
As the song played on
