HARARE BALLAD, TRIPOLI BLUES

by Obirikorang Adu   Apr 16, 2008

In the obscurity of our black minds,
Lets pray for snow on the Sahara
And hunt for the penguins of the savannah
With the striped felines of Rhodesia
High breeds or hybrids?
In the serenity of our frigid souls,
Lets build a morgue in Saudi Arabia
And rather trade elephants to the North Pole for fur
Lets plant an evergreen forest in Northern Mali
And fish for salmons in the Volta
In the oneness of our divided motives,
Lets sell the Nile to Brazil
And peddle Victoria to the Americans for gold ore
Lets teach the English Kiswahili
And show the Portuguese how to sail on the high seas
In the divine nature of our earthly transgressions,
Lets tell the world
That Yaa Asantewaa breastfed George Washington
With the spiritless exudates of her left breast
And William Wilberforce was the progeny
Of the unguarded sentience in the loins of Kunta Kinté
In the infernal depths of our ethereal spirits,
Lets carve a mosque in the Vatican
And build igloos in the Kalahari villages
Afterall, are they not blood brothers of the Eskimos?
Unity is strength,
But what of strength in numbers?
Our synergy is calcified on a falsified tablet
Baked in the fire of unfounded and ungrounded deception
Its a ballad poetized in Harare,
A sonnet arranged in Tripoli,
And a play colourfully dramatized in Accra
