EVERYTHING BUT US

by Obirikorang Adu   Apr 16, 2008

I can't love you with the love I'd have loved to love you with,
But I can't befriend you with just the friendship that I share with my friends
I can't express my inner feelings for you, the way I want to,
But I can't treat you with superficial emotions of false pretence
I can't stand the dreary thought of losing you,
But I can't bear the tragic reality of keeping you
I can't tell you the entire truth of how I feel about you,
But I can't lie about the spirited, oft-bestial yearning I have for you
I can't hold your tender hands in mine even for a time so brief,
But I can't let go of you without grief
I tell myself that you are a fleeting silhouette,
And not an unending delusion, indelible on my mind
I pray time becomes the hiatus between you and I
And not the drawbridge across the moat to the very grounds we once-shared
I want to believe I can live when you leave,
And not lie and die with a woebegone sigh.
I know you;
You know me;
But we know us;
We can't be us!
