The Only Real Thing

by Painted on Smile   May 2, 2008

Like a ghost
i walk through the halls
through crowds of people
not noticed at all
the world races around me
but i do not notice it in return
for i am in a world all my own
a world where this sweatshirt
that guards me from the cold
and hugs me away
from the bitter bite
of the icy rain
is all that exists
for in all its faded
red, white, and dark blue glory
it is the only thing real to me
it is the thing
that has kept me warm and safe
from this harsh, cold, and evil world
it is the thing
that has wiped away my tears
on those nights
where darkness grips my soul
it is the only thing real
for it is the only thing i have
that reminds me of that boy
the one so brave
with the heart so big
i'm surprised
it could fit upon this earth
the boy that i
think of,
pray for,
and worry about
more and more each day
for i know the day
that he must leave
is drawing ever nearer
though i dread it
i will always and forever
support him
with as much encouragement
as the love and bravery
that he has shown this world
