Under the stars

by Shellaine shelli   Jun 10, 2008

The night you didn't come home
I found myself sitting in the dark
awaiting your return...

My younger sister gone to sleep,
The older one becoming so
suddenly weak...
She cried herself a lullaby
of tears...
I sat there holding her hand
and comforting her fears...

Don't say that you simply left because
of me. because you know that
is not true, I was only a child...
What more did you expect me to do...

He was so intoxicated
he couldn't even stand
then he got into his car
trying to take matters into is
own hands...

I didn't hear him leave
or else I would have stopped him
for in his intoxicated state
the road was nothing but his deadly fate...

The night you didn't come home
I found myself sitting in the dark
awaiting your return..

I counted the stars in the sky
praying that you would return home alive
I'm not usually the type to talk to God,
To this day I still wonder if he even heard...

Maybe it is better this way
now that you are out of your pain
but the question I ask is
what were you thinking,
what possessed you to
get in the car even though you
had been drinking...

Years have gone
and days have passed yet...
I still find myself waiting under the stars....

This poem really moved me, is all this related to you? Am so sorry you went through this. The poem is full of questions deserving answers problem is maybe there might never be one... I liked this expression, cries a lullaby of tears, its well applied. Good work
