Stain of Fake Smiles

by RetroRavey   Jul 5, 2008

The stain of fake smiles left behind,
Burns past the cover-up
And bleeding mascara...

My reflection in the mirror
Does her screaming once again,
Silent words that sound
Throughout my head...
She tells me to smile,
Work the muscles that make my expression fake.
She tells me to dry my eyes,
And keep up the facade
I've been using for weeks.
It's hard to walk away from here...
Hands reach out to touch her through the glass.
What memories does she hold for me?
What memories does she hide?
I could've spent a thousand years without knowing,
Hiding behind my smiles
Hiding the pain...
She hides me in my prison,
Behind my own eyes.
I see,
But I'm not living...

Every smile is a stain on the soul,
Each one more fake,
Each one more noticeable
Even than the bleeding mascara...

This is an amazing piece of work. Though sad each word so vividly describes your emotions and its hard for the reader not to be drawn into the same painful world.

I loved the ending! It just seemed to add so much more to the poem and was able to sum up everything so nicely. And especially thw words "bleeding mascara" - it was simply awesome! 5/5 from me
