Church Bells

by Wolf Haines   Aug 8, 2008

Did I tell you about the time
I listened to the Church bells chime?
I wanted to listen all day,
But they stopped to my dismay.
Then again I managed to see as the shepherd did herd,
His sheep to the daily chirp of the blackbird.
I saw as the river reflected the view
Of the surrounding fields and their morning dew.
I caught a glimpse of the rowers as they moored their boats,
And of the contented couple eating a picnic upon their coats.
I watched the milkman do his daily round,
And heard all the daily sounds.
Like Mrs Williams gossiping to anyone who will lend an ear.
And Mr Hayward opening the pub door for his afternoon beer.
I also heard the giggle of children in the school,
And the sound of Mr Jones flirting with Mrs Halls (how awful!).
I could also hear the rumble of a horse,
As young Jane took it through her imaginary racecourse.
I could hear the laughter of a couple with love so true
That there isn't anything they wouldn't do.
I heard the whistle of the postman as he walked up each path.
I saw the steam coming from Mr Harris' house after his bath.
I saw the woodlarks swirl through the trees,
Singing their beautiful melodies.
And at the end of the day before I retired for bed
I thought to myself and out loud I said...
'What a charming little world we live in.,
