The Cheshire Cat's Best Friend

by StandStill   Sep 8, 2008

The Cheshire Cat has a best friend,
Almost like little old Alice, you see?
The Cheshire Cat smiles so big...
His best friend, dear reader, is me.

Ever wonder what it's like, oh darling?
To watch grins spread across like the moon?
Ever wonder what it's like to hope
that reality will blossom so soon?

The Cheshire Cat's just a lost soul,
Lost like Alice and me.
Attempted invisible, attempted invincible,
but he's falling apart at the seams.

Grasp the kitty by the tail, dear reader,
can you hear him cry out in the night?
Cheshire Cat seems so clever
'til he's drowning in instinctual fright.

The Cheshire Cat has a best friend.
Some of you have seen her tired old eyes.
Cheshire Friend needs a hug now,
waiting for the tears to dry.

Confession: The Cat has a soul..
it's just burried deep in the sea.
Cheshire Cat's coming home someday...
Praying he's coming home to me.

First I need to say, I have always been in love with that "feline" :) ...this poem has some kinks and flaws in it, such as a sudden reference to a "sea", however, it is far better than a mere "4" rating! The poet seems to have a natural sense for elements of truly excellent poetry that so many others seem to miss - that words are more than just dictionary et. al given meaning; it has sound, tonal quality and aural importance (even if it is just heard inside the receivers' head). And, this work weaves it all into an Ophric delivery that holds its experiencer till the end and allows for them to leave with such a "grin"!
