Letting Go

by Danielle   Sep 10, 2008

Wind blowin' through our hair
Waves crashing at our feet
A taste of freedom dancing in the breeze
And he's standing here beside us
His hands gently holding ours

Graying eyes speak a solemn vow never broken through the years
The creases around the edge of aging lips
Mark the smiles of pride he'd show
And those faint trail of tears?
Those tell tales of heartache he carry
Just to spare the pain he never wanted us to feel

Once strong shoulders sag a little more with each passing day
Funny how to me I still see him standing there
Shoulders held high, smile on his face
Watching from a distance as I cross that finish line with pride in his eyes
Faint words only I could hear; "That's my daughter."

His hands are rough
Worn from days spent working to give us everything we needed
Each callous tells a story
How he'd gently hold us in his arms
Whisper away a nightmare
Wipe away those tears we'd shed
Clap for a job well done
And pick us back up when we'd stumble
They're rough to the touch
But gentle to each memory they hold

He's aging
Making his way to the waters edge
His hand forever holding hers
Waves crash at their feet
A gentle breeze blows
A tear escapes as I softly whisper;
"You can let go now, Daddy.
We can make it on our own.
It might be a little scary, but I want you to know
Your little girl's are ready to do this on their own.
We'll be okay now, Daddy
You can let go."
