The old man standing on the rain

by a broken smile with a broken heart is a poets life   Sep 26, 2008

The thunder shakes the earth,
Little people run for cover as the first droplets hit the ground.
Lighting strikes somewhere on a mountain top.
And smoke starts to rise.
The sound of the rain drops hitting my window,
is soothing to my ears.
The window looks like it's crying many tears at once.
The small drops slide and collide with each other
Just as my thoughts do with my pain.
Sitting beside the window I hold my wrists.
I fight this pain trying not to embed it on my skin.

I see an old man standing in the rain,
His clothes are soaking wet.
His eyes are looking up the sky,
Satisfaction seems to spread on his face.
That old man standing in the rain seems so serene and calm.
I wish I had that calmness in me.
And not the ringing in my ears as
The stinging spreads through out my wrists.

The violent rain seems to swallow the old man,
Yet he stands there smiling at the sky.
He turns his head toward me
His face filled with wrinkles shows the handsome man he once was.
As we make eye contact
He mouths the words goodbye.
He stares the smile on his lips becomes wider.
So I smile back even if my heart doesn't.

The old man standing in the rain
Falls to the ground and doesn't move.
The rain hits his peaceful face
And a sinking feeling invades my heart.
I panic.
Just as my window cries my tears also fall.
That man died alone with no one by his side.
And from a stranger's smile he let go of this life.
I lift my bleeding hand to the window
As if trying to soothe its crying.

A crowd gathers around the old man.
My tears continue to fall in rhythm with the rain.
No one cared when he was alive.
Now that he is dead everyone rushes to his side
Like blue flies swarming on rotting flesh.
No one cares.
No one mourns for him
Not even me.

Whoa, this one gave me goosebumps, so full of pain and anger and sorrow. very amazing

  • Yes you understood exactly what the poem was about. you're right the speaker was envious toward the old man for being so calm and serene. while she's in so much pain. and the bitterness trhough out the poem was a way for her to cope with every thing life has given her and now that this old man stands there so calm she gets more agry with the unfairness of life...anyway thank you for reading my poem!!

    WOW!!!! Great job!
    Absolutely incredible.

The imagery was great, and you really got a sense of what the speaker was feeling. The sadness and the pain were especially potent throughout.

I may be imagining it, but does the speaker also harbor some sort of bitterness toward the old man? The only reason that I ask is because the speaker was in so much pain, and the old man was peaceful and serene, even when facing his death.
The last stanza is what made me think of bitterness the most.

I also sensed some envy from the speaker towards the old man.

I also liked how you intertwined the rain with tears, how the window was "crying", and how it connected to the speaker's tears and pain.

The whole work is just well put together and nicely done.

    Great work!!!

    Keep writing!!!

    5/5
