What Bridge?

by ether   Dec 26, 2008

Of vital signs, you got it all wrong.
You checked the beat but not the rhythm,
Heart and lungs, no cares for the rest.
Monitored in code- seen but not acknowledged.

Light your cigarette just to watch it burn,
Said you burn three packs a day.
They make you feel as full as the ocean,
And as empty as the sky.

Repeat the song, repeat the tears
That tore the soles out of our shoes.
Lost in the city and smoke haze
Shredded with the calendar days.

Doesn't it all seem so funny now,
Trivial pursuit cards in back pockets,
And how I read the daily horoscopes for you,
Before I kissed your picture goodnight.

Excuse me Miss, this is the only way I know;
I brought you stick figure drawings,
The best way I knew how to express myself;
You and I. I'll save this kiss tonight.

All these things might just paint me desperate,
I've got the matches but no bridge to burn.
I've got the fire but no eyes to light,
Watch as the wind changes, these paper hearts of ours.

    The poem overall is extraordinary, wonderful.
    This stanza is the best:
    "All these things might just paint me desperate,
    I've got the matches but no bridge to burn.
    I've got the fire but no eyes to light,
    Watch as the wind changes, these paper hearts of ours."
    It just moved all my emotions at once.

    This is so different than anything else you've written, in my opinion. It's deep, yet so obvious at some parts. I love the mix. I don't have much more to say to it, other than it's really good (:
