All I need to know

by Daisy if you do   Feb 16, 2009

It hangs on a nail, with no need for a shelf
Displayed in glory with no grand stories of wealth
its history is riches more precious than gold
With labors of love that could never be sold

Now dust and sweat have soiled the brim
And years of wear have worn it thin
Been used as shelter from a mid day rain
When sowing seeds or growing grain

Steered many cattle into another direction
Been held in respect for a moments reflection
Cradled the knowledge and planted seeds
That produced the fruits of his families needs

The crowning leather that donned his head
Tells more about the man and the life he led
The worth of a man is not measured by his wallet
Its measured in patience and how well he taught it

Wow I did not go an see what others have written so I would not be influenced by what has already been said. I have to say that I think this is one of the best poems I have seen here and I really feel that the words you chose were excellant and the thoughts even better. I could tell where it was going before I got there but I let the slow current of your poem take me in and push me along while enjoying each and every line. Bravo on a work that shows the talent that always flows from you heart and your pen. excellant work Daisy.. very excellant indeed.

Kay - this is great! Very visual - filled with detail in a few words. A very loving piece in honor of a fine gentleman, I've no doubt.

I'm always wary about rhyming poetry, but you pulled it off, it was a very well penned poem, and none of the rhymes seemed forced. An excellent tale with a thought provoking couplet at the end. Very mature and contained a very nice flow.

    Well done.
