The Importance of Being

by Larry Chamberlin   Apr 25, 2009

The Importance of Being

Other people's lives,
Other people's dreams,
Are hatched in our heads
Like Cuckoos overwhelming the nest.

Jealously protect your own ideals,
As tho preserving your birth-right 'mergence.

Look upon your own world,
And find the intensity...
... of blinding morning sun reflecting off a misted lake,
... of the myriad aches that each morning yields,
... of the smile on a child who adores you,
... of speeding through traffic, earth rushing by;

the intensity...
... which music draws to the surface of your soul,
... which frustration sticks deep in your gut,
... which love's hope spreads as honey on hot buttered toast,
... which fear of ruin drives us to succeed

the intensity...
... for the accolades of winning the close battle,
... for savoring the last drops of Grand Marnier,
... for recognizing your soul mate the first instant
... for accepting your death will extinguish it all.

Let all your own experiences spring off
Your nest and take flight, but leave mine
On this page, they do you no good.

I am very drawn to this piece and read it over several times. There was just something about it that kept me coming back.

Perhaps it was the power the words hold or the format in which they were displayed. But either way "the words captivated me"

Really loved this ending touch !

I think this is the first time I have read your work. And I am glad I came upon it!

I am nominating this poem because .... I think it is very unique and holds in the mind long after the read.
