The kids are home for holiday

The kids are home for holiday

So peaceful this morning, warm and overcast
Clouds sitting, a time to enjoy with your love
Quietly puttering in the kitchen, no one else
But the two of us, deciding how to fill our day.

There are often times like this but a bit less full,
Empty of the sleeping princesses who haven't yet
Felt princely kiss of their new day to awake them,
Then fall upon us in flurry of food and plans.

Those other early lulls were pleasant, true enough,
But they did not contain our sleeping germ of youth
Unaware of their limits, dozing, yet inevitable
In the energy they bring, the lilt of girlish song.

I'll take the empty nest when it comes, of course,
But I relish in the quiet moments we steal from
The pandemonium of teenage drama day to come;
These moments: hardly a word, but a touch, a glance.

Monday Kat will return to college, me to work
Jessica to school and my rose will fly away
For days on end; this quiet will be more sodden
With footprints on the stairs of empty slippers.
