A night out with the boys

by Ronald Edwards   Sep 11, 2010

Pieces of him fell about
as the fighting raged.
Thru midnight sight, flashes of light,
survival was uncaged.

Hold your ground, just stay low,
as RPGs explode.
From the last flash I aim my gun,
that mark I then unload.

No need to wonder if I hit
targets cross the way.
Screams of agony rang out,
they bled out where they lay.

My heart is pounding like drum
as muscles ache and bloat.
But as I land upon his back
my knife will find his throat.

No matter how I scrub and wash,
their souls just wont come off.
If only tears from all my fears
would find a sloping trough.

Innocence and courtesy
two words I have forgotten.
Replaced by rage from a 12 gauge,
forgiveness has turned rotten.

When all is done, as brass walks by,
my actions I explain.
Its then I yearn, how to return
from madness in my brain.

Brilliant, visceral look into the mind of a soldier trapped in the madness of battle and all the permanent mental wounds created as a result.
