Homecoming Hero: Aftershock

by Jack Nightengale   May 18, 2011

The enemy draws near,
As the smoke starts to clear.
I can feel the adrenaline as my heart starts to race,
As the Sun touches the sweat on my face.

With a rifle in one hand and a knife in the other,
I pray a combative prayer for my fallen brothers.
"In this struggle grant me protection and speed,
For in this battle that is all I need.

As I raise my head to look at the clock,
I hear a boom and feel the aftershock.
I see that the reinforcements are finally near,
The day for this Homecoming Hero is finally here.

This is my kind of poem! I've been posting mine in the wrong category till now. Anyway, great piece of work and believable 1st person narrative!
