Awakening

by Mel   Jul 29, 2011

Paper walls
Quiver with every exhausted exhale

Cut-out windows,
A wide open door,
But no way to escape...

The sun warms the unscathed flesh on her back
Stings the welts

She can smile
... She can still feel something after all of this.

Twisted fingers
Caked with blood
Trace the wings of a dead fly,
Before crushing the lifeless bug.

She brings the fingertip to her lip.
A swollen grin,
No hint of remorse.

Just a taste...

And finally,
She understands why she stays.

This is really dark and powerful, although I haven't been able to fully grasp its meaning. Part of it seems to be about a victimized girl or woman, who continues to remain in the abusive home. But it has darker elements to it, perhaps showing how the victim ends up victimizing others.

    Another fine write from you!!
