California Gift

by Anonymous Me   Sep 29, 2011

A week before Christmas I received a present
From my family near the California Coast
The first present I got from Uncle and Auntie
A present I would forever remember the most

It was wrapped in pretty snowman paper
With a ribbon shiny and gold
A box shaped secret that tickled my mind
With special little things it carried to behold

As the minutes turned into restless nights
Notions filled my thoughts on what it could be
And dreams filled my head
With thousands of toys that stood before me

Soon Christmas Day would come
And I would open my beloved present
But it was still a few more sleeps
And my dreams just became more relevant

Finally the day arrived and I awoke with a start
Flying out of bed early in dawns awake
All gathered around the big, green tree
With sleep that lit our drowsy faces

We sorted the presents, saving the best for last
My green papered box waiting for me
Finally it came, and finally I saw
A beauty of treasure that no other can beat

Shining in the Christmas lights
The most beautiful Barbie lay inside the box
I stared at her brown hair and green colored eyes
Dazzled with her unnoticeable flaws

I just couldn't wait to have fun with my new best friend
So I played by myself while everyone went to bed
I sat and imagined what she was saying
And where she was going, all inside my thoughtful head

She went to the frozen pieces of land
To play with the dressed up penguins
She went to the sun filled state of California
To thank Uncle and Auntie for the holiday goodness

She went to the busy city of New York
To visit the Statue of Lady Liberty
And then came home to Alaska
And told me all about her sight seeing journey

I gave her my favorite name Isabelle
And I taught her to read and write
She sometimes didn't do her homework
And sometimes she didn't do it right

She went shopping in her pretend mall
She went skating on her pretend lake
She went to the moon many times and came back
And told me it wasn't made of cheese and it was all a fake

Sometimes when I got angry with her
I sent her to bed without any dinner
And then gave her a big breakfast
When we got up in the morning

As we grew up, I became taller and fuller
All she did was just wear-away
My best friend became worn with love
That it was time for her to move away

My big brother and his friend decided it was time
And Isabelle took another journey
She wasn't going to come back and tell me
It was to the toy heaven that she sometimes spoke of

They placed her on the ground
And gave her wings of fire and string
She blasted to the skies up, up high
On that eve of New Years

I cried and cried until I felt a little better
Knowing that she had a good life and home
We already traveled the world together
And it was time for her to be on her own

I wrote her imaginary letters
And sent them by imaginary mail
I made her imaginary post cards
Of the world we both saw

I sat and imagined what she would write
I sat and imagined the words she would say
I sat and imagined the thoughts she would think
And I sat and imagined the memories she would remember

Like going to the frozen pieces of land
To play with the dressed up penguins
And to the sun filled state of California
To thank Uncle and Auntie for the holiday goodness

Like going to the busy city of New York
To visit the Statue of Lady Liberty
And then coming home to Alaska
And telling me all about her sight seeing journey

Like learning how to read and write
And going shopping at a mall
But the one she would remember most
Would be when we first met
My pretty green colored California Gift
