Riveting Friendships

by PinkyPrincess   Feb 20, 2012

It all started high in
an unusual mountain,
where strangers emerged
and developed into friends.

As the water flows,
friends grow to be family;
a family that is blind,
but sees our true selves.

With additional water,
we miraculously flourished,
celebrating our journeys and
our simple yet complex lives.

We drift from every direction,
yet the distance could never
separate us - because of our
love connecting our hearts.

Even when we're downhill,
someone is always there
to console us and comfort us
like a stream of warm hugs.

Rocks may bruise us along the way,
but our strong bond will remain.
For we all naturally flow along
the same splashing river.

- Dedicated to my family members at Like the Flowing River, for you all are special and dear to me. Love you <3

Interesting that you begin it in the mountains. Of course, many rivers do begin high in the hills, so it is an intuitive start.

Strangers emerging from the mountain reflects the Navajo legend in which the Dinee' (the 'people') emerge into this 'shining world' from a place below. They are said to have come out between the four sacred mountains, real mountains in New Mexico and Arizona.

I understand why they were blind: not the least concerned about each other's faults, accepting, therefore not distracted by outer appearances, able to see into each other's hearts.

Simple yet complex: each of us are ordinary persons, not pretending to be what we are not, yet we are each wrapped up by multiple needs and pulled in many directions in our lives.

Again, like many of us, the distance is recognized, yet brushed aside. The depressions we face, the hard bumps through which we suffer are made easier with the comfort and strength of our true fellows.

    Wonderful poem, Sara!

I'm loving reading all the poems dedicated to our little family at LTFR,
It makes me feel just a little brighter to hear you describing our little realm, you did this brilliantly, such a beautifully written poem, simple but really speaks the truth.
