Of War and Sleep

by Celtic Warrior   Mar 12, 2012

I woke last night, in sweat and tears,
Though it was a dream, I still shook in fear.
Battle's of past, did rock my mind,
On my bed, I re-lived moments in time.

I march down the road, my uniform crisp,
Rifle on shoulder, no care of any risk.
My vision sharp, eyes cold and blank,
I am an enlisted, Pv2 is my rank.

I scream in fury, the scene changes sudden,
The environment a battlefield, bullets and bodies flooding.
My finger twitches, gun exploding at the tip,
Bullets sink into my enemy, muscles burn and rip.

I felt a sting in my back, for this was the end,
I woke up, looked around, no war, no support, no friend.
This moment I cannot tell,
Awake or asleep, I'm trapped in hell.

This poem brings more to the table than a rhyme scheme. You have laid out the visuals of what every combative soldier must go through at one time or another, most often after their return home from the war. The battles will rage in their mind and they will feel the sting of wars rememberance for a lifetime. Very well done dear. Brings a tear to the eye knowing this is more truth than fiction of what service men think.

Being in a war must have been really terrifying. But the memories must be a whole lot more horrible. Thanks for sharing this poem, it's beautiful. 5/5

Gosh the images are so vivid and in depth in description. I could never imagine what it would be like at war, I don't think I could emotionally handle it.

I think you have described the pain so well and the rhyming was awesome.

I am very sorry if this is what you are going through right now

Woh, what a powerful write! ... telling of war relived in your mind and the horror it must give. You really bring your thoughts and feelings home to the reader.

Well penned dear Poet, very well penned indeed.
