City on Fire

by Jack Nightengale   Dec 1, 2012

No moon was out,
No creatures stirring about.
Not a soul was wandering,
Trapped in their homes slumbering.

Outcast among them arsonist they plea,
Just a simple man to set their souls free.
Cast aside and pushed away,
No one saw that his soul had turned gray.

A blackened heart that grew darker over time,
Now no one would know of his simple crime.
He hated this city with all his might,
He figured that it was time for it to have light.

He planned it just right,
All on this very night.
The air grew colder still,
Through the streets gas was what he would spill.

With a cigarette in one hand and a match to ignite,
Not a single creature moved not even the birds took flight.
He smoked until dawn until all was set,
He stayed as his cigarette and the gas met.

From upon a hill he saw how it all started to crumble,
Watching people aflame drop and tumble,
His body grew weary, he slowly started to tire,
He fought through his sleep to watch the city on fire.

Love the rhyme scheme you have crafted here... It gave me a sense of the night before Christmas... but it takes a dark twist and turn... and I love that!

Mercy... I could picture a man standing alone in the cold dark of night.... with a cigarette falling to the ground.. meeting gasoline... Love the visual display I got from this... Yes Yes Yes! Love this dark piece!!

The Past, is hunter of Present. To every effect, there's a cause. Indeed smartly dedicated.
