You'd call if you needed me

by Yakari Gabriel   Oct 11, 2015

These nights, when the lonely
holds me between bed and sheet.
My thoughts become graffiti artists
inside my brain. They paint your
name in bright colors. In all fonts,
until its completely covered in you.

the cold makes my finger tremble
across the phone screen-
But as I put a sentence together
Warsan Shire's voice somehow finds
my ears. She whispers; 'If you wanted me,
you would have chosen me'

This is how I survive not
texting you, for weeks at the time

Again, I was drawn to this. I'm not sure how you do it but you manage to take all the things I love and place them in your poems to write something that resonates well with me. 'Paint', 'Bright colours', 'fonts', 'Warsan Shire', I love these things, I love this poet. Sometimes I really do thing we share some of the same brain haha.

'Graffiti artists' < I've had the term graffiti in my head for a while now, ever since I went out and did some street photography, I've been trying to find a way to use it in a poem but haven't wanted to force it, and here you are, making it seem effortless. Your writing is never forced, that's what I appreciate about your work.

There's a longing to this poem, a sadness that creeps from your words. However, I also find strength within the lines, power, your voice is confident.

You've become a brutally honest writer who does not hide from her own thoughts. You embrace the pain, the sadness and even the anger.
