Hymn to the Sun (Gayatri*)

by Larry Chamberlin   Mar 29, 2016

Normal Monday headed downtown
furry bodies litter gutters
sun so bright you can see their eyes.

Easter toll in suburbia
offerings for turkey vultures
roosting crowded on low buildings.

However often repeated
is this deathly worship divine
illumination eludes me.

*Gayatri is a verse form not often used in Western Culture.
"Gayatri is ... a Sanskrit word for a song or a hymn, having a Vedic meter** of three padas, or lines, of eight syllables. ... [It can refer to] one of the most well known Vedic hymns [Gayatri Mantra] consisting of twenty-four syllables. This hymn is addressed to god Surya (sun) as the supreme generative force. ... repeating this hymn again and again leads to salvation." Retrieved on 29 March 2016 from https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gayatri

**Vedic meter is measured in syllable count, not stresses.
