Recollections

by Alex Penuelas   Feb 22, 2017

Sometimes,
When I look back at the times
When we went out
see the stars
In the warm summer skies.

To feel the warmth of the
Sand beneath our feet
As you dragged me to the beach
To get my feet wet.

To play in the arcade at the pier,
When you were much better
At playing the games
Than I was.

When we reached the end of the pier,
and looked out at the
Ocean, and all of its magnificence,
Hearing the waves
Clashing behind us,
and being entranced
By the deep.

When I drove you back to
Your dorm, and you wished me
"Good night",
With a warm hug and a quick
Kiss on the cheek.

When I look back at
The things we used to do,
I realized I miss the memories,
and not necessarily you.

The last lines were sort of painful but liberating. It's amazing that the person was able to reflect and identify that all of those are just mere memories, not all are able to do so or reach that stage, being continued to be swallowed by the cruelty of memories and not even the person anymore. This was honest and raw. I love it. All best.

We all feel like this at least once in our lives, and believe me I've got my fair share of similar poems buried in the 95 pages I've got here lol. But anyway, back to this, nicely done. I especially enjoyed the strength at the end that you do not miss the person you simply miss the good times you had. Well written.
