As trees keep falling
The sound they make would be us
Gasping for some air

    Hello Walter.
A poem about deforestation clearly is going to be a sad one, in my opinion simply because of what it means "the action of clearing a wide area of trees." and well trees give us oxygen so does this mean eventually when trees all go the human race will too? Not to mention the animals that are upheaved by this horrendous act.
The actual content of this is simple but extremely efficient in what this portrays, you say it in such an impactful way and one that could hopefully make these people who cut the trees down think carefully about what they're doing but as I said on a previous piece I've commented on 'leopards never change their spots.'

Good luck with this week's competition,
    Em xx

Hello Em, thanks so much for your message and as you say, it is the one we can only hope the tree cutters will hear to stop and think about what they are actually doing and how they are impacting us all. And as you point out, it's all the animals who instantly suffer by our selfish acts. I really hope it's not too late... xx

This is a brilliant and well written poem :) This is the sad reality of the world we live in nowadays no one truly cares or understands how important trees are to this world. Same with the oceans. It's all about money now.

Even the first line sends a powerful message that should wake people up. Trees are falling due to greedy human beings. I don't think people understand that trees are living things that we rely on.

I like the word play in the second line, it's the cliche of "if a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound" the answer is yes of course it does. I love the implications that we are intertwined with nature because without nature we wouldn't be able to live at all.

The last line sums everything up perfectly not only would we be gasping for air, there would be no turning back or saving us at all. You did well to tell a sad tale within three lines and hopefully someday the world will wake up.

Thanks very much Rayven for your comment and your interpretation above is exactly how I hoped this Haiku would be read. Your point on every line I think summarizes what I wanted to say perfectly :)

How very true Walter. There are parts of the world (and in my country) that are cutting down old-growth forests, trees that have been around for hundreds if not thousands of years, and seeing pictures of those huge logs is just not right. There's been a lumber shortage and the prices have skyrocketed over the course of the pandemic, which drives people to cash in on the ludicrous profits, but at what expense?

Thanks hiraeth and I couldn't agree more. It's sadly happening everywhere it seems and it will certainly be a high price for all of us to pay in the long run. We can only hope it's not too late or past the point of no return. A big thank you also for your nomination.
