Immigrant

“They have bigger sandwiches
here, the size of my arm. They respect
traffic rules. And they’re happy here.
People are happy.”

He declared,
exhilarated and
chirpy, the way a first grader
would feel, floating in a lagoon.

I savor his one-minute
phone calls
every couple of hours as he
chronicles the details
of life unperceived
in a war-ravaged homeland.
